Mcleodganj

Mc Leodganj is famous for its Buddhist temples, small handlooms and handicrafts shops, jewellery and crystal market which lures western as well as domestic tourists. Also known as Little Lahsa, this is an important place for Tibetan people in exile in India outside TIBET. Home to His Holiness Dalai Lama, the place occupies important status for fellow Tibetans, Indians & western tourists who wish & seek paths to salvation and moksha. The important Buddhist centre in the town is Tsuglag Khang, His Holiness Dalai Lama's temple. It has statues of Shakyamuni, Avalokiteśvara, and a statue of Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche).

 

Just 9 kilometers from main town Dharamshala, tourism occupies important status in McLeod Ganj. The town is good for day strolling and a short trip to Bhagsunag nearby that has ancient Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities. A fresh water stream uphill at Bhagsunag make a short journey exciting.

 

History

 

Mcleodganj was originally home of the semi nomadic local Gaddi tribes who are masters of hills and know many interesting facts about high altitude and passes in higher regions of Dhauladhar.  In the mid 19th century place was developed as a British link to important administrative points for them in Kangra Valley. from historical period of British and arrival of Tibetans different cultural colors are added to the lifestyle of Mcleaodganj. Western tourists find this place interesting as it is home to a live Buddhist Spiritual leader and Indian tourists and scholars also come here to see the reincarnation of engrossing culture.

Attractions

St.John's Church - Fine example of British architecture & a memorial of Lord Elgin, the famous British Viceroy who died in 1963. A historical old bell hanging down from ceiling is famous thing to notice. Amidst thick deodar trees where you can easily locate the great Himalayan black faced langoors. This church has been decrated by fine Belgian stained glass windows donated by Lady Elgin

 

Dal lake - This lake in Dhauladhar region has greenery of surrounding deodar /pine trees & its beauty make this place a favoured picnic spot. Apart from the scenic views. A local fair is celebrated here every August-September, this fair is especially celebrated by local hill tribes commonly known as "Gaddis"  who are regions best trekking guides in these mountain ranges.


Triund - Triund is on the foothills of Dhauladhar range and is 17 km from Dharamshala and a 9 km trek from McLeodganj passing through Dharamkot and Rakkar at a height of 2,827 mtrs. The breathtaking views of the mountains and the valleys make Triund an ideal spot. A ropeway is available from Dharamshala to Triund and accommodation is available at the forest rest house at Triund.
 

HOW TO REACH
By Air - The nearest airport is Gaggal airport, 24 km from Mc- Leodganj

By Rail - The nearest stations are at Kangra and Nagrota (about 29 kms.)  And the nearest railhead (broad gauge) connecting Dharamsala to and Jammu is at Pathankot.

By Road - Mcleodganj occupies good road network with state connected roadways services for India's capital Delhi and major cities of Himachal Pradesh. State transport runs deluxe as well as semi-deluxe buses on the routes towards Manali, Mandi, Kangra, Pathankot and Delhi.
